Statistics from the traffic department show that in 2013 a total of one hundred and twenty crashes occurred along the Thika Super highway, of this, one hundred and thirty five people lost their lives. In the same year the Githurai roundabout has reported over 20 deaths involving pedestrians hit by speeding vehicles.

kasaraniIt is in this respect that on Wednesday, February 19 2014 Usalama Watch Initiative with support from Global Road Safety Partnership held a procession at the Githurai roundabout. This is in line with their program on advocacy for pedestrian safety along the Thika Super Highway.

The procession was held to calling for action by the ministry of Transport and infrastructure, the newly formed National Transport and Safety NTSA, the Kenya National Highways Authority, the traffic police and county governments of Nairobi and Kiambu to address pedestrian safety issues on the Thika Super Highway.

The procession began at the spot where over twenty people died in 2013 at the Githurai roundabout. In attendance was the Githurai Member County Assembly Hon. Jackson Mwangi Ngare, Assistant Police Commander Mr. James Onyango, DTO Kasarani Ms Elenah Nyoria, OCS Githurai Mr. Samuel Otongo, Thika Superhighway road crash victims, area Primary schools, local colleges and universities, Kenya Red Cross Thika branch, Media fraternity and local residents.

At the culmination of the procession a tree was planted to remember the lives the lives lost on the Thika Super Highway with Githurai Member County Assembly Hon. Jackson Mwangi Ngare calling for the following key risk factors addressed to make the Super Highway safer for pedestrians:-
Better signage throughout the highway
Speed calming measures in built-up areas
Erection of barriers to protect pedestrians
Increased police enforcement
Construction of additional foot bridges in places that have none and that have a high human traffic
Maintenance/safety around existing foot bridges

Usalama Watch Initiative will continue to work with the Githurai MCA and other policy makers to improve pedestrian safety on the Thika Super Highway.

The school children road safety program is based on the commitment that no child should ever have to negotiate dangerous traffic on his or her way to or from school. In 2009 and 2011 the human (driver/cyclist) error was singled out as a major cause of road accidents in the country.
